Desi’s got Talent
Posted on 18 May 2008 by Ikram Ali

How many famous British South Asians (Desi’s) can you name? That’s right, not many. Other than a few Big Brother rejects, those people from the Kumars at 42 and the token Asian family in Eastenders – who else is out there? Yes a few are blazing a trail, like Jay Sean, Tre Azam, Konnie Huq, James Caan, Saira Khan - but they represent a drop in the vast ocean of British celebrity and the mainstream media. Where are our Davina McCall’s, our Jude Law’s and Keira Knightley’s?
But rest assured, a smarter generation of Desi’s are paving the way and setting examples for up and coming performers. SIGNATURE is a well established dance duo in the Desi circuit. They took a brave step crossing over as they auditioned on the hit ITV show “BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT”.
Suleman Mirza and Madhu Singh’s explosive performance was received with a standing ovation from the audience - even Simon Cowell had to show us his pearly whites with a smile, teary eyed Amanda Holden and former paper boy Piers Morgan – all voted for Signature to go through to the next round.
For those of you who have been living on a deserted island in a shoe box with no windows the past few years; Britain’s Got Talent is a reality television show searching for Britain’s next sensation. The winner will have the opportunity to perform in front of the Queen and other members of the Royal Family, as well as walking away with a mouth watering hundred thousand pounds.
The show is led by the infamous Simon Cowell, well known for his bitterness, overly white teeth and ice cold rejections. But Suleman and Madhu pulled the rug from under them, comments like “We weren’t expecting that”, “I’m absolutely dumb struck, that was brilliant” and “you could win it, you’re exactly what we’re looking for” followed the performance from the duo.
But what did they do that was so different? What made them such a national success? They reached out to a wider audience base with something very different to what would be expected. The performance begins with Suleman dancing flawlessly to Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean. Mid-performance, a guy accidentally comes onto the stage brooming and almost ruining Sulemans performance. How does this end? Watch the clip and find out for yourself!
Suleman is affectionately known as one of the World’s number one Michael Jackson dance imitation artists. He has also been a background dancer for Bollywood’s biggest names, such as Sunil Shetty and Anil Kapoor. However the X-factor behind Signature is without a doubt Madhu Singh. Madhu has been tearing our sides with laughter for many years now - many of you will have heard of him and be familiar with his voice if you watch Zee Music. He is THE Madhu from Zee’s top Music show, ‘Murts Cutz’. After many years behind the scenes, Murtuza Ali’s secret side-kick with no face - Madhu is now on centre stage, where he belongs.
Signature, combining two genres of music and dance styles to provide a unique performance, making these two boogie boy, genius maestros an all round hit.

It should be “Desis got talent”. Not Desi’s, there are also other errors throughout the article. (Apologies for being pedantic!)
Love Signature! An interview of the act would be great :)

Funny thing is, even though Suleman’s the one with the mainstream dance skills, its Madhu who steals the show, and him doing the splits at the end, priceless, just priceless.

It’s true, there aren’t that many British Asians in the entertainment industry, and if there are, they have to have an Asian theme for some reason!
I’d like to see some more Desi’s moving into the mainstream entertainment, it would be great to see some “homegrown” people presenting and doing integrated shows that don’t necessarily have to be aimed towards the Desi community, lets let people of other cultures see how great we can be.
Oh and that Madhu, pure jokes, I almost fell of my chair when he started jammin, I’d definitely like to see some more of their act.

It’s SO true that there are not any decent Asian role models, if there were more Asians in the industry doing great commercial work then it would give the public a better image and possibly encourage some more talent to pop up and represent their heritage.
And not to sound like a granny here, but some of you pedantic readers seem more concerned with looking for errors rather then reading the message behind the article
And as for Signature, whoop whoop I love them, go Madhu go!!
