UK Asian Music Awards

Votes for this year’s UK Asian Music Awards (AMA) are in, and its fans are eagerly anticipating the event ceremony. Organisers are doing their best to top 2008’s star studded show, with 2009’s AMA’s seeing some of the hottest and most talented artists and producers from the British Asian music industry.2008 has been a groundbreaking year, with British Asian music sales soaring in the UK and abroad. Adding to that, some of these chart favourites have featured in Bollywood movies; artists such as M.I.A has further progressed with their world domination; and the industries golden child, , was signed to a major US record label. It is only a small testimony to how accomplished our home grown talent has become.

The night is hosted by singer and actress Karen David, who I promise you will look amazing, and VJ Salil from B4U. There will be live performances by acts like H-Dhami, Mumzy, as well as US R&B group Jagged Edge, among many others. Already the event is looking like it will be one to remember, with many of the categories being packed with some big names. H-Dhami is up for three awards including the Best Male Act and Best Video. InsideDesi’s favourite, , is going strong with three nominations, and will be seeing himself go head to head with H-Dhami and Raghav in the Best Male category. The Best Female Act category is also enjoying stiff competition with artists such as M.I.A, Veronica and Hardkaur giving each other a run for their money.

In the past, the AMA’s have been criticised for not recognising other talents beyond a core base. Some voters felt that the camp was particularly over-represented. I would argue however that you cannot dispute the talent that is being turned out by the music mogul. His production on Sadke Java was great, and it won H-Dhami the Best Newcomer award at last year’s ceremony. The biggest competition for this year will be Sukshinder Shinder, with his work on Jazzy B’s album Rambo.

I am particularly looking forward to the Best Club DJ category, where Panjabi MC and DJ KRASH are going head to head for the award. The latter has been going from strength to strength in his career, and winning this award will only round off a successful 2008.

The award will be held on Thursday 5th of March at the Royal Festival Hall in London. For more information go to www.theukama.com.

Desi british music sounds so horrible and there seems to be little room for creativity it all ends up sounding the same.

Best Female category - lol, how can you compare a genuine legend in the making with “artists” like Veronica and Hard Kaur?? Veronica can sing pretty well, but Rishi Rich drowns out her vocals for no apparent reason. Hard Kaur is like the Asian version of Lil Kim, but even worse.

As for Best “Club DJ” - Panjabi MC can barely call himself a “DJ” because he can’t mix or scratch. He is a producer who raps/DJ’s for a laugh. Krash should win the category on merit, let us hope that justice prevails.

As for Rishi Rich camp dominating, it is because he has power for some reason, even though he last album sold less than 2,000 copies in the UK. He now uses - for 50% of his work - ghost production or buys in beats, then calling them his own. He has done almost NOTHING in the past year and does not deserve to win.

Jay Sean has done really well in the UK and I am very happy for him - but he hasn’t been signed to a “major” label in the US. Ca$h Money is pretty much a joke/subsidiary label with no credible artists (Lil Wayne doesn’t belong to that label!) and I guarantee Jay Sean won’t do a thing with them. Best of luck to him, though.

I Like H Dhami but his album was nowhere hear as good as Juggy D’s. The UK AMA’s need to stop the vote rigging and the paying off, and let people actually vote properly. A good test of this will be if Krash wins.

If Krash wins, then the credibility of the awards will increase tenfold.

HaudKaur is an abomination. The comparison made by Sejal is true. Lil Kim is disgusting… and so is HK.
