Salim-Sulaiman hit the right chords with “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Promotion for Sharukh Khan’s much awaited film “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” hit the screens last month with the tag line: “There is an extraordinary love story in every ordinary jodi.”  With this film, director Aditya Chopra promises to make us ‘laugh’, make us ‘dance’ and make us ‘fall in love’. And judging by the promotional videos and the music of the film, it seems Aditya Chopra may just live up to his promise.

The album opens with the song ‘Tujh Mein Rab Diktha Hai’, and the music directors Salim-Sulaiman (Salim Merchant hit-chords-rab-ne-banaand Sulaiman Merchant) go old-school, presenting the music in a classic, melodious style.

From listening to the song ‘Ashayein’ from ‘Iqbal’, and ‘Maula Meri’ from ‘Chak De India’, we already know that the duo can produce good music. With ”Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi“, they prove they can actually become the next kings of the game. Roop Kumar Rathod gives a rendition that immediately catches ones attention. His mellow voice, teamed with the heartfelt lyrics written by Jaideep Sahni, only adds to the charm. Later in the album, Shreya Ghoshal also croons a slower rendition, and shows us that she has the potential to become the Lata Mangeshkar of the next generation.

The second song of the album, ‘Haule Haule’ has been used on all the advertising videos of the film, and has already got Sharukh Khan fans humming along to the tune. In an era dominated by electronic instruments, Salim-Sulaiman here choose the harmonium as their main companion. This combined with the voice of Sukhwinder Singh perhaps makes it the most romantic song of the year.  Although the video was shot in just one take, Sharukh Khan’s playful movements and facial expressions brilliantly capture the feel of the tune.

Next up is ‘Dance Pe Chance’; Salim-Sulaiman give us what we expect from them. They have fused bhangra with electronic dance, and created a song that will potentially take the dance floor by storm. However, there is nothing original here.  Even the dance routine, performed by newcomer Anushka Sharma, is very much inspired by Madhuri Dixit’s dance number in ‘Dil to Pagal Hai’.

The fourth song, ‘Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte’, sung by Sonu Niigaam, is a personal favourite. It is a medley of old bollywood songs. One may argue that there is nothing original about it, since it has been done many times before. However, here Salim-Sulaiman and Jaideep Sahni have arranged the music and the lyrics together in a clever manner: a selection of bollywood songs from the golden era, and yet a completely fresh and original sound.

The album ends with ‘Dancing Jodi’. This is basically an instrumental mix of the songs of the soundtrack. This track made me sing along to the songs of the album, and reminded me how good the songs really were.

Word on the grapevine has it that one last song has been kept under wraps until the release of the film on December 12th.  I’m for one am definitely keeping my ears open!

I love SRK’s hair in the movie when he is Raj… i think it suits him more than the longer hair he had in Om Shanti Om.
