Real men cook
Posted on 05 June 2008 by Pras Geng

While more and more young Asian women enjoy life in the fast lane, juggling a high flying career and sporting an exciting social life, distancing themselves from the traditionally domestic stereotype, a silent revolution amongst their young professional male counterparts is on the rise. These young men want to cook and they are making it happen.Men who cook are more desirable than ever before, and we do not only have to thank the ever increasing popularity of male celebrity chefs. These days young career women are more concerned with mixing cocktails, heating up ready meals and cooking sauces from a jar, while men take pride in cooking from scratch. There is a genuine curiosity amongst this new breed of men to want to portray that well-rounded image and add depth to the notion of an eligible bachelor. This curiosity may initially be fuelled by the benefit of scoring brownie points with a woman as it is simply seen as sexy for a man to be able to cook. However those who discover true passion for food will build on their new found “hobby” to become more competent in the kitchen.
I have learned the basics from my mother at the age of 15, but it wasn’t until I started university that I realised how much I actually enjoyed cooking and how much girls actually liked a guy that could. A romantic dinner for two, a quick snack for myself during the day or a big tray of finger food for the lads during a football match on TV are all occasions on which my culinary creativity seems to flourish.
While there is still an abundance of burnt toast and stained microwaves across the country, learning the basics does not require much skill or previous knowledge. How difficult can it be to follow cooking instructions on a packet of pasta or rice?
The underlying factor to a successful meal is preparation. You have to make sure that everything that needs washing, chopping, peeling, slicing and dicing is done before you start cooking as this will prevent you from panicking and getting the timing wrong. Use different chopping boards for meat and vegetables and wash your hands after handling raw meat. If you have anything that needs defrosting, make sure you take it out of the freezer the night before. And lastly, wash up as you go along!
If you are a little hesitant about embarking on this area of your life because you feel that men who cook are not real men, take comfort in knowing that the vast majority of Michelin star recipients are men.
I personally would like to see even more young Asian men discovering their skills in the kitchen as I believe that men who cook nurture their self-respect and reinforce a proud sense of masculinity that has been lost over time. So with that being said… viva la revolución!

I used to cook… but found that it was taking up way too much of my time. Now I just settle with the basic stuff (pasta etc.). Some of the best cooks in the world are men… so gone are the cliches of men not being able to cook!

What a good article, I’m exceedingly lazy and have constant disasters in the kitchen no matter how hard I try. I love food and, even more, love being cooked for! I was very pleased to find my boyfriend watching on YouTube and subsequently putting into practice Ramsey’s perfect scrambled eggs the other day…

Yup, good article.
As a career women by day a ’socialite’ by night, I never really got the knack myself.
It’s lovely coming home to food cooked by a loved one.
Although the girls tend to cook in the irrestible way that mums do, the guys cooking seem more health conscience, more adventurous and more filling!
A domesticated man is definately on the top of my ideal man wishlist. : )
