Priyanka Chopra in Madhur Bhandarkar’s latest venture

It seems Priyanka Chopra has returned to her roots, as we see her star in Madhur Bhandarkar’s latest film Fashion - a film about the dark and glamorous world of modelling.
This is the biggest budget film director Madhur Bhandarkar has made to date. Bhandarkar, usually known for his high octane, high intensity films (Page 3, Corporate, and Traffic Signal) has decided to slow down the pace with this latest offering; and with the size-zero debate in full swing in all circuits, this film could have not been released at a better time.
Rumours have been escalating around the film that the former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra, had to lose 8 kg in order to look as thin as her female co-stars Kangana Ranaut and Mugdha Godse. Apparently, she successfully had lost 4 kg, but was told that, due to her bone structure, she would never be able to look as slender as Ranaut or Godse!
But ‘Piggy-Chops’, as she is affectionately referred to in the industry, has spoken out against these allegations, explaining the extreme toning-down was not in competition with the other actresses, but actually for Karan Johar’s new production Dostana, in which she had to sport sexy beach-wear.
The word ‘fashion’ often exploits the idea that extreme weight-loss is essential to pull-off the latest trend, and the three leading female roles are centralised upon this very idea. All three actresses have been made to look close to anorexic in order to present the grueling aspect of suffering required to become catwalk queens.
It was reported in the Indian press that Chopra had helped director Bhandarkar write the screenplay to the film after his past projects failed to set the box-office alight, and although Traffic Signal won him a National Award, it did not bring him the commercial success that he needs to compete with the Anees Bazmee’s of Bollywood.
Fashion was created as a joint production between Bhandarkar and UTV Motion Pictures, with the film costing almost a staggering Rs. 100 million (£1 million) to produce. A trailer packed with contrasting emotions; cast members taking daring risks; accompanied by punchy music will hopefully be a winning-enough formula to get Fashion noticed within the mainstream.
Although Bhandarkar’s films are usually based on women-orientated subjects, he has already decided that his next project will be centered around three men, in a film titled Jail.
For now, let’s keep our fingers-crossed that Priyanka and the girls will be able to make Fashion unforgettable.
